Practicing with a target helps replicate on-course scenarios. To pick a target, step back and draw an imaginary line from where you want the ball to finish to its start position. Next, address the ball and aim your club at a point on that line, like a divot, tee or leaf.

Unless you’re purposely trying to draw or fade a shot, your feet, knees and hips should all aim parallel to your target line, as shown above. Placing two clubs on the ground when practicing means you can easily check your alignment and form good habits.

It's all too easy to subconsciously open your shoulders while taking a final look at your target. To avoid this pitfall, place a club across your shoulders and see where it points. For correct alignment, your shoulders should be parallel to your target line, just like your feet.
