Welcome to another edition of our newsletter.

On the Ladies European Tour, England’s Charley Hull took a wire-to-wire triumph at the Fatima Bint Mubarak Ladies Open in Abu Dhabi, for her second win on tour. It was a real test of nerve at the finish, with Hull splashing out of a bunker on the 18th, before saving par with a great putt to give her the win by one stroke.

Water bound

With the winter weather still in full flow, you might have come across water on the course in some unusual places. With heavy, consistent rain, bunkers can end up holding water – but luckily for you, you can take relief if your ball ends up in a wet and sandy grave.

Rule 16.1c states that if your ball is in a bunker and there is interference by an abnormal course condition – such as water in the bunker – then you’re allowed to take two different forms of relief. ‘Free Relief’ is the nearest point of complete relief and the relief area must be in the bunker. ‘Penalty Relief’ would see you playing from outside the bunker, on the line of your original lie, at the cost of one penalty stroke.

Remember that the new Rules of Golf allow you to drop from knee height – this reduces the chance of your ball “plugging” in damp sand, making the next shot a whole lot easier.
